Thinking about one of our classmates, Danalee "DJ" Rumbell Frugalia is recovering from a Kidney Transplant. Here is an excerpt from her email:
I have been on a transplant recipient list since mid October and they said there was about an 18-24 month wait until a possible offer with a match. I got a call Feb 10th and rushed to Portland and had a kidney transplant on Feb 11. I'm still in Portland and out of the hospital now but have to stay here for a month to ge back and forth to the hospital (OHSU) Oregon Health Sciences University for Dr. appts. and lab etc. for the next (few weeks?) before I may be able to go home, but I am very restricted on activity and have to wear a mask everywhere because of the high level of immuno suppressant drugs they have me on. I will be going back and forth from home to Portland (about a 6-7 hour drive) for the next couple months. I'm thrilled to have a new kidney but I'm so disappointed to miss the reunion. The surgery went well but it feels like I got a kidney from a gorilla, still pain where they put it which is in the front in the lower abdomen. I wanted a kidney but not before the reunion. I had been on peritoneal dialysis for almost 3 years and did it at home every night with a night cycler so was still able to work full time and go about my business as usual but it was a pain to go anywhere because I had to pack the cycler and all the supplies for the process so I really didn't go much - that is why I was so looking forward to the reunion and now I can't go anyway. I'll let you know more about my experience once I return home or if I get a chance to come to the computer here at the Hotel. You can pass this on to anyone that may be interested, I don't mind. I am happy I can communicate with some through the website since I don't have email addresses with me here. Thanks Kathleen. ~D.J.
******UPDATE ON DJ AS OF MARCH 5.......I'm doing better each day. I found out from the doctor yesterday that the donor was a perfect match for me - that is why I didn't wait on the list so very long for a donor. They were really pleased with the fact that all the antigens they check for were all the same - I understand that is unusual. (Does that mean I'm a gorilla also?) Tee Hee. I know I'll be down here in Portland at least another week or so but I'm getting to the point I just want to be home for awhile. Becky left today and Mike will be back here tonight again to be with me the next week. I have labs drawn every other day and they are changing my prescriptions for various things practically every blood draw. I'm sure learning alot about the transplant process and the immuno-supressant drugs along with various compounds in blood they check for. Portland is notorious for rain but we haven't had alot since I got out of the hospital so that has been refreshing. It's a little different being in such a large city after living in Enterprise for 37 years.
We celebrated our 38th anniversary while down here and I couldn't have gotten a better gift for the celebration than my new kidney. I'll keep you posted on things. I'll try to keep logging on to read what many classmates have writtan. It's been great to hear from them.
~Danalee
Wouldn't it be great if we kept "DJ" busy with tons of email from us through the website? I think it would speed up her recovery! We will be sure to take lots of photos and videos from the reunion and post them for her to be able to view. Ken Costa suggested she come in a big bubble, not a bad idea DJ, ask your doctor, maybe we can rent a bubble for you! Click on the gorilla (she thinks she got a gorilla's kidney) below to take you to DJ's profile where you can send her a message and brighten her day.

A big thank you to Ken Costa for for putting the spirit of '69 out there and having the courage to announce our 41st Class reunion. It will be held on April 24, 2010 at the Pleasanton Marriott, more details to follow. There will be a special room rate for the Class of '69 and I hear some folks have already made their reservations! If you would like to helpput the reunion together please email Ken Costa by clicking on his name. We can use lots of help! This site will be where you can check for announcements regarding the reunion. There will also be email updates as new information and reminders are pending, once you register on this site. Classmates will also have the ability to email you. It's our own little social network. If you know of any classmates, or even have clues as to where they might be please email us, we have a committee who is working on tracking folks down, your help is essential! As of February 24th we have 42% of the class online, that is phenomenal! Our goal is 50% by the time the reunion comes around, help us meet that goal by encouraging your buddies to sign on!
On a personal note, being the web administrator of this site (Kathleen Quinlan Rushing) has been an absolutely delightful job! As I have told many, I was a serious under-achiever in high school, I wasn't too involved in social or academic activities (went camping with friends instead of attending the Senior Ball) and did not attend too many other dances, clubs, etc. I was kind of shy, really in that area (however, I did create the famous Kazoo Band immortalized in the yearbook) BUT, I've grown up pretty well, discovered my stride and am glad to make up for lost time by putting my talents to use on this website. I have greeted most all 201 classmates that have signed on. Overwhelmingly, all are friendly, helpful to bring others aboard and excited to see everyone again. We are all very different people now. I have enjoyed our emails, sharing our lives, kids, grandkids, careers, pets, hobbies, triumphs, losses, sorrows, hopes, faith, blessings and philosophies over the past 41 years. I think we all grew up really well despite the 70's some of us passed through, and I can tell you without a doubt, each one of you has touched someone's life as you post your profile and become a part of this ....
Hey! In April 2010 we'll each be 40+ years older than we were when we left the halls of SLHS. Every single one of us has changed. (Well, maybe not Ken Costa, he's the only exception) (*editors note, he married well) Statistics say most of us are heavier, graying, thinning, or no hair at all. Some of us use artificial assistance to preserve our good (or not so good) looks, however we ALL have grown older. So, suck it up, or in, throw on what makes you feel good and most of all, SHOW UP AT THE REUNION! Not coming because you think you don't look as good as you used to just isn't acceptable!
The Class of 1969, Non-Traditional?
In thinking about our class, I realize we were very non-traditional (41 year reunion?). We were the first girls to wear pants to school one cold day and to wear pants to the Senior Ball (check out Carolyn Capps' profile). I believe a few of us got suspended over that. Names like Lynette Rego, and Carole Van Leiden pop up when I think of that... do I remember that correctly? What a shocking display of rebellion! Have you seen the way kids dress in high school now? What's up with the underwear thing? I remember driving around in Meredith Asher's 55' (or so) Pontiac, and I bet she might still have it! (I checked with her at the Reunion Committee meeting last week, she does still have the '55!) I saw her Dad's 60's blue Pontiac parked out front of their house awhile back. I'd love to hear Meredith's updates on those cars. If you have pics of your high school cars, or those you wish you had never sold (mine was a maroon '69 Mustang) send them to me and I'll post them on our VINTAGE CARS page.
This site will help us remember those kind of memories I'm sure you've got to share. We hope to make this site YOURS with your stories and contributions. Please contact us if you would like to be involved or contribute. Please visit profiles such as those belong to, John Skoglund, Luray Canham Good, or even mine to get a sample of what you might want to put out there. Were you shy in high school? Well, you're too old to be shy now, tell us your story!
The response to this site has been very touching. If you can offer information or encouraging stories regarding our classmates who have passed, it will be a loving gesture, greatly appreciated. This is a wonderful opportunity to offer tributes to our classmates who have gone on before us, offering healing and thoughtful regard for lives that touched ours. Please visit this site and contribute.
We'd love to see pictures of your grand kids. These 6 belong to a very special grandpa. Did I mention I have a new grandson named Bailey (please don't tell me you have a dog named Bailey, I warned them)Check him out!
I have been looking through our yearbook, Anchors Aweigh, and remembering a lot of things long forgotten. I would encourage you to do the same ~ please get out your yearbook and revisit the Class of 1969. Whether you are sittin' on the dock of the bay, or lighting your fire (it's probably a fireplace these days..) try to remember some stories and send me an email, I'll post them. As I look at each picture, and type each name individually, I try to remember an encounter with each face. What I remember mostly is each person's smile. I am enjoying trying to fit all the hairdos into the scanned frames! I'm not just talking girls hair either! It's been 41 years... we are all very different people now. I'd love to meet you all again. See you at the reunion, but in the meantime, check out this guy's profile....by clicking on his picture.... hey, he's still got hair!
My husband and I were invited to dinner last week by Jan Finke Pleger's parents, Gene and Millie, married 65 years last month. They are living in Heritage Estates senior apartments in Livermore. We had a wonderful time, reminiscing, looking at Gene's stamp collection, their view of Mt. Diablo, Millie's storage space, looking at pictures of grand kids and listening to the story of how they met during WWII: Gene was hitchhiking, got picked up by a family friend who brought him to church, there was Millie, and the rest is history. 4 kids and 10 grandkids, 1 great-grand kid later they still have that gleam of love in their eye and the overwhelming gift of hospitality, the only thing they regret is that their apartment has no storage space.....here's a picture I took of them. Send pics of your parents, let's start a Parent's Page! Click on Gene and Millie's picture and it will take you there. I encourage you to visit your friends' parents if they are still around. You will be blessed outta your socks as will they. Hope my kids' friends do the same for me someday.
Who is a bomb of a water skier and looks just about like she did in High School? There has been much interest in this question from the guys.....
This Week's Question: Which SLHS '69 classmate is a Gold Digger living in Alaska?
Go to the Weekly Question page to get clues and answer via email
Linda Eade sent this PRICELESS class photo. Amazing how many students went all the way through to graduate at SLHS in 1969!

What does Wikipedia have to say about San Leandro High School? Click on it and see!
I bet many of you had Mr. Durland Skinner for your music teacher in elementary school. I have kept in touch with him through the last few years through a mutual friend. He has broken his hip and is in rehab at Kaiser facility in San Leandro, KPPAC, 1440 168th ave. He would love a card, a call, a visit, he even has email durland.skinner@att.net He is very frail but still as funny and mischievious as ever at 88. Here he is, happy to have me come sing with him.
Thanks to the class of '68 website for this classic! click on the article to find out about what Jane's up to now. Tom hasn't checked in yet. Anyone know where he is?
